Built in
InDesign documents open directly in DesignCraft.
DesignCraft reads .indd and .indt files itself, without InDesign, by converting them to IDML in memory, and it imports IDML too. A separate converter would only repeat that.
Already compatible
Built into DesignCraft: it opens .indd and .idml directly. Nothing to convert.
No upload, no conversion. Here is how to do it, and what to check.
What carries over
- Pages, spreads and parent pages
- Text frames with their formatting
- Paragraph, character and object styles, swatches
- Placed graphics, tables, hyperlinks
- Fonts and document structure
- A document you can edit and export again
How to open it
In DesignCraft open the .indd (or .indt) file from the File menu. If you still have InDesign, you can also use File ▸ Export and choose InDesign Markup (IDML), then open the .idml in DesignCraft.
Worth knowing
Opening .indd is new and still being measured on real documents, so check a few things afterwards: text that overflows, fonts that are substituted, and linked images that need relinking.
If a document looks wrong, an IDML export from InDesign is the more reliable route, when you have InDesign.
Questions
Do I need InDesign to open an .indd?
No. DesignCraft reads it on its own.
What about fonts?
Fonts aren't stored in the .indd. Install the same ones and the text will flow as before; missing fonts are substituted.
Is the result identical to InDesign?
Not yet: the .indd format isn't documented, and the DesignCraft team is still closing the gaps. Check the result before sending it on.
