.ai
.vectorcraft
Built in
Illustrator files open directly in VectorCraft.
No converter needed. VectorCraft opens .ai and .ait files itself, reading the PDF copy Illustrator stores inside them and the structure of its editing data.
Already compatible
Built into VectorCraft: it opens .ai files directly. Nothing to convert.
No upload, no conversion. Here is how to do it, and what to check.
What carries over
- Layers, groups and artboards
- Paths, shapes, fills, strokes and gradients
- Text and placed images
- Older PostScript .ai files (versions 3 to 8)
- Templates (.ait)
How to open it
In VectorCraft choose File ▸ Open and pick your .ai. The artboards of the file open as artboards in VectorCraft.
Worth knowing
Brushes, symbols and pattern fills arrive as their drawn look, and live effects and appearance stacks are flattened.
If a modern .ai refuses to open, open it in Illustrator and save it again with Create PDF Compatible File turned on.
Questions
Do I need Illustrator?
No. VectorCraft reads the file on its own.
Will it look identical?
Usually the artwork does. What depends on Illustrator's private data (live effects, some appearance settings) doesn't carry over. VectorCraft's own notes say it hasn't yet been measured on a large set of real .ai files, so check important ones.
What about fonts?
Fonts aren't inside the .ai. Install the same ones; missing fonts are substituted.
