Questions

Is it free?

Yes. The site is supported by ads; there's no account, no watermark and no limit on project size beyond the upload limit.

Do you keep my project?

No. The .aep, .prproj or .ecproj is processed in a temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the converted project is sent back to you, usually within a couple of seconds. Nothing is stored, and your footage never leaves your computer. The privacy page has the details.

Which versions of After Effects are supported?

Projects saved by After Effects 2018 (version 15) up to 2026. For an older project, open it in a newer After Effects and save it again.

Which version of EffectCraft do I need?

0.9.2 or later. Projects are written in the format of 0.9.2, which newer versions open too.

Why does my footage show as missing?

The converted project points at the paths your footage had when the .aep was saved. If the files are still there, EffectCraft finds them when the project opens. If they moved, or the project was made on another computer, use File ▸ Dependencies ▸ Relink Missing Footage… and choose the folder that contains them.

Will it look exactly the same?

The structure, timing and values are the same: the converter checks them one by one. The pixels can differ slightly, because EffectCraft draws effects, text and 3D with its own engine. Third-party plug-ins aren't in EffectCraft at all; the report names each one.

Can I convert an EffectCraft project back to After Effects?

Yes: the EffectCraft to After Effects converter gives you a script (.jsx). In After Effects choose File ▸ Scripts ▸ Run Script File…, pick it, then save with File ▸ Save. The questions below are about it.

What about Photoshop or the other Craft apps?

This site converts After Effects projects (to EffectCraft), Premiere Pro projects (to FilmCraft) and EffectCraft projects (to After Effects scripts). Photoshop, Figma and PDF files open in their Craft apps directly; more converters are on the way.

My project didn't convert. What can I do?

Open it in After Effects (or Premiere Pro), save a copy (or File ▸ Dependencies ▸ Reduce Project to a single comp), and upload that. If it still fails, write to us from the About page; a short description of the project helps.

Which versions of Premiere Pro are supported?

Projects saved by Premiere Pro 2020 and later, up to 2026. For an older project, open it in a recent Premiere Pro and save it again.

Which version of FilmCraft do I need?

0.8 or later. Projects are written by FilmCraft's own engine, so the file is the one FilmCraft would save itself.

Why does my media show as offline in FilmCraft?

The converted project points at the paths your media had when the .prproj was saved. If the files are still there, FilmCraft finds them when the project opens. If they moved, or the project was made on another computer, right-click the offline media in the Project panel and choose Link Media, then pick the folder that holds them. You can also give the media folder before converting, and the project is written pointing at your files.

Can I convert a FilmCraft project back to Premiere Pro?

Not yet. FilmCraft exports AAF, Final Cut Pro XML and other exchange formats that Premiere Pro opens.

Which version of After Effects do I need for an EffectCraft project?

2023 (version 23) or later. The script uses scripting that has been in After Effects for years; track mattes need 2023, and formatting single characters of a text needs a recent version. An older After Effects still runs the script and the message at the end says what it could not do.

Why a script and not an .aep file?

An .aep is a closed format that only After Effects writes reliably. A script uses After Effects' own scripting, so the project is built by After Effects itself, and you save it as a normal .aep.

Has the script been tested in After Effects?

Not in Adobe's. Each script is run in EffectCraft's own After Effects-compatible scripting engine, and the project it builds is compared with the original value by value. That proves the script says what it should, not that every call behaves in Adobe's After Effects exactly as documented. If a step is refused, the message at the end names it; write to us with it.

What does the message at the end of the script say?

Which footage files it could not find (a placeholder stands in), what After Effects can't build from a script, which steps After Effects refused, and the fonts used. The website's report has the same list for each layer.

What happens to effects EffectCraft has and After Effects doesn't?

The script tries them by name; if After Effects has no such effect, it is listed in the report by layer and name. The layer itself still comes across with its timing, transform and other effects.

Why is a gradient, a curve or a 3D cube missing?

After Effects' scripting can't write gradients, Curves data, Dropdown Menu items or LUT files, and can't create 3D primitives. Each is listed in the report, with the gradient's colours so you can redo it; a null layer stands in for a primitive.
